An introduction to hoerspielbox.de

the project hoerspielbox.de supplies a complete and exhaustive toolbox, which allows children, youngsters and of course all other users of the internet to create their own radio shows, radio plays, tracks for, say, a holiday video, theatre soundtracks, or even acoustic components for websites and CD-ROMs.

The heart of this offer is a, to date, unique and publicly accessible sound archive in the internet. As an initial resource, 1000 sounds, voices, and sounds attempting to embody an atmosphere - all satisfying the highest possible acoustic standards - are offered for download.

The archive will be augmented with a reference resource which discusses sound processing software, sound generators and drum computers. These pieces of advice are individually downloadable as text files, some of which exclusively for this project.
In order to enable users new to digital sound processing to benefit exhaustively from the vast potential of hoerspielbox.de, a detailed reference guide comprising of advice with respect to issues such as optimal data formats, downloading, use of software, down to theoretical and practical suggestions (e.g. mixing, dramaturgy - with examples from other pieces) is offered as well.
Hence, the structure of hoerspielbox.de also supplies an independent platform for competitions and interactive projects within free audio production, besides being an evident tool for continuous use and reference.

For the roll-out of the website, an experimental "audio miniatures" competition directed towards children and youngsters was jointly put up by SFB/ORB and the Academy of the Arts during the festival z 2000 (15th of July - 20th of August 2000, Berlin) in order to introduce the potential of hoerspielbox.de to the general public. The theme of the competition was "The five best minutes of mankind". Other competitions will follow.

The main idea of hoerspielbox.de is a fruitful dialog between internet with its interactive capabilities and radio as a tradititional form of media or other distributors.
